FAQ for Treasure members

Thank you for choosing our jute bag grow kits. This FAQ section will help answer some of the most frequently asked questions to help you with your growing journey.

What is the best time to start growing the bags?

The jute bags are starter kits designed for indoor growing all year round. There are certain time and seasons which which can be followed for best results, especially if the plan is to transplant the seedlings outdoors when it has outgrown the bag.

Wildflower

The best time for sowing is Spring in March/April or Autumn in September.

Cherry tomatoes

The best time is Jan-April for fruition in July-Oct

Is there an expiry date?

There is a batch number on every seed packet in the format of MMYY. The best before date is 2 years from the batch number. Seeds may still grow after this date. To maximise longevity please store the seeds in a cool dry place.

How often should I water?

Soil moisture content is very important to get right. Too little moisture and the seeds will dry out, too much water and oxygen will struggle to get to the roots. The jute grow bag is designed to make this as simple as possible.

When setting up the jute grow bag the first time the soil will need to be expanded in water. It is important to squeeze out excess water after this before being used in the bag. The resulting soil should be moist but crumply and breaks apart in your hand easily. If the soil sticks together like wet dough, it is too wet and you will need to squeeze it out more.

The good news is once it is in the bio-lining bag, sowed and sealed, the bag acts like a mini greenhouse and the moisture is kept in. No further watering will be necessary until the seedlings start to appear.

When the bag is unsealed, further watering will be necessary depending on the environment. It is better to underwater than to over water. Start by adding a few drops and slowly increase the amount of water. The goal is to keep that moist crumbly soil texture. You'll get a hang of it after a few tries, you got this!

Do I need to transplant the seedlings?

For best results we do recommend transplanting into larger pots when the seedlings outgrow the grow bags. The jute bags help the baby seeds on its first leg of the journey to maximise their germination rates. As the seedlings grow into adult plants, the more space there is for the roots to grow the larger and stronger the plant can flourish.

What size pots will I need?

We suggest your next pot size to be 10-15 cm diameter size. Half fill this with multipurpose soil. Carefully without disturbing the roots, remove the seedlings together with the soil from the bag and bio-lining and place it into the new pot. Support the new seedlings by surrounding it with some more multipurpose soil.

Keep the soil moist and leave the pot in well lit place. After a few weeks the roots should fill the pot as the plant grows larger and stronger.

When the plant outgrows this pot we will suggest repeating the above steps and transplant it into a larger pot about 20-25cm in size. This will also be the right time to place the pot outdoors if you wish.
